Mint Julep Margaritas Are the Perfect Answer to Your Cinco de Mayo/Derby Cocktail Conundrum
While they almost always fall within a few days of each other, this year’s Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby happen to land on the exact same weekend, just one day apart (May 4 and May 5, 2019).
And while we can’t decide between a colorful ruffle top (à la Carmen Miranda) or a wide-brimmed organza hat (Lilly Pulitzer dress sold separately), there are some things in life we shouldn’t have to choose between, like what kind of cocktail we should we be sipping come Saturday and Sunday.
That’s why we’re here to introduce you to the best concoction for this year’s Derby de Cinco celebrations. Expert imbiber, meet the Mint Julep Margarita. This cool lime cocktail marries the best of both worlds (and liquors) so you don’t have to choose between your two favorite day-drinking festivities.
And don’t worry about a recipe. Just whip up a regular margarita, but go 50/50 with tequila and bourbon and toss in some mint and simple syrup. Sugar or paprika salt rim? Ladies' choice!
Don’t believe us? What better place to find one than at a Kentucky locals-only bar. Best of all, this trendy cocktail is perfect for any rooftop soiree (not just horse-race-themed ones), so you can sip them all summer long.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to the races...but first, the grocery store for that paprika salt.
