Missouri Police Officers Go On Comical Police Chase For a Lemur
"We got the lemur."
A lemur on the loose sent two police officers in Springfield, Missouri on a comical chase that was captured on body cam video.
The officers answered a report of a lemur in the road, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. When they spotted the animal, a short foot pursuit ensued.
In the body cam footage released by the police department, the lemur is running along a sidewalk and then into a grassy area. The officer chasing him is holding a towel that he twice tries to throw onto the animal to stop him.
Both times the lemur gets away and continues to run.
"Dang it!,” the officer yells each time.
Onlookers eventually get involved and start chasing the lemur too, some of them calling it like a pet.
“Should I grab its tail?,” one woman asks.
Eventually the lemur slows down and the officers scoop it up in a towel.
“We got the lemur if you want to contact the appropriate services,” the officer says on his radio.
Employees at Springfield-Greene County Animal Control came to get the lemur and kept it safe until the owners of the pet - who had reported it missing - could be reunited.
Unfortunately, the happy ending took a turn due to a city ordinance that prohibits residents from keeping wild animals - including lemurs - as pets.
“This little guy’s owners did end up surrendering it to animal control,” an update to the original Facebook post said.
“The lemur has been connected to a local wildlife rescue agency where they will continue to be well cared for and loved!”
