Mother of 9-year-old boy arrested after students get sick from weed gummies doled out at school
A Cleveland mother was arrested Monday after her 9-year-old son brought marijuana-laced gummy candies to school and gave them to 14 classmates, according to a police report. While she has not been formally charged, police say she was arrested on suspicion of child endangering, the Plain Dealer reported.
Ten students at Anton Grdina Elementary School, who are between the ages of 5 and 9, were taken to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital for treatment after possibly ingesting the gummies. Other parents and students declined medical treatment. Although several of the students complained to school officials of stomachaches, only the 9-year-old boy tested positive for THC at the hospital, according to the Plain Dealer.
The police report says the boy’s aunt initially gave him the gummies on Sunday night when his mother threw a party at their apartment. The boy said the aunt also gave gummies to a 5-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy because “she was not in her right mind,” the Plain Dealer reported.
The mother saw the children with the gummies, but did not take them away, the police reports said. Instead, she told them to go to bed.
Late in the night, while the mother was doing dishes, the 9-year-old boy went into the kitchen and told his mother he loved her, as a distraction. Meanwhile, the 6-year-old boy took the remaining gummies off the table, the outlet reported.
The two boys brought the bag of gummies to school in a backpack and handed them out to their peers.
A teacher was cleaning her room on Monday afternoon when she initially threw the bag of edibles into the trash. When she retrieved the bag, she noticed the candy was laced with marijuana, and she immediately contacted the school’s principal, who then called parents and the police.
Police officers went to the mother’s apartment and arrested her after questioning. The aunt was also questioned, but experienced a panic attack and was treated by medics at the scene. She was not arrested, according to the Plain Dealer.
