News Flash! Molly Shannon Bought Her Own Independent Spirits Awards Dress
Let’s just say that Mary Katherine Gallagher had a major moment on Saturday.
All of the winners of the Independent Spirit Awards were thrilled about taking home their trophies. But one in particular took her enthusiasm to a whole new level. When her name was called for winning Best Supporting Female, Molly Shannon was so excited that she sprinted from her chair in the audience through the crowd and up onto the stage. Backstage, the Other People actress told Yahoo Style that she dressed for such an occasion.
“I did think about [it], just in case I win, in the same way I do comedy. I always think I want comfortable shoes because I like to be prepared and still be physical but also elegant,” she explained. Shannon also revealed that her dress came from Neiman Marcus and that she purchased it herself.
Isabelle Huppert, who won Best Female Lead for her role in Elle, dressed for the chilly Los Angeles day. “It fits the weather,” she said, of her Chloé pantsuit ensemble. “I really love Chloé,” she cooed backstage.
As a cool breeze blew through the tented red carpet from the nearby Pacific Ocean, Hollywood’s finest paraded their awards-show best down the preshow runway. One notable woman not present: Jackie nominee Natalie Portman, who’s been a constant on the awards circuit. The buzz at the Spirits: perhaps the pregnant Portman was having her baby?
Orange Is the New Black’s Danielle Brooks was looking fierce in an Urban Zen by Donna Karan jumpsuit. In addition to debuting a slimmer frame, the actress proudly put her feminine assets on full display.
“I let the girls hang out today,” she said, with a laugh. “And really the reason I am wearing this is for the plus-size girls, to let them know that you can wear stuff like this too, and do it in a classy way. I think that’s important because a lot of us feel like we can’t be on the trend, but we can,” she noted. In order to learn how to properly support her bosoms, Brooks took to YouTube. “I watched a lot of videos from drag queens and they helped me out — the sisters helped me out. And duct tape!” she exclaimed.
Aisha Tyler arrived in a Rochas dress, Louboutin shoes, David Yurman jewelry, and a multitude of goose bumps. “It was sunny literally until about a block from here. I’ll live through it. You leave the house thinking, ‘I want to be cute,’ and then you get here and are like, ‘Why am I not wearing sweatpants? Terrible!’ I should be in sweatpants and Uggs right now,” she joked.
Backstage, Ben Foster raved about winning his first award ever — he won for Best Supporting Male — and touched on how his character in Hell or High Water had impacted him offscreen. “I had to drink a little less Shiner Bock afterwards,” he quipped. “He left some marks!” When a reporter commented on how sweet it was that he thanked his pregnant fiancé, Laura Prepon, during his acceptance speech, Foster mentioned that he’s been pampering her left and right.
“Well, you know, foot rubs go a long way when you are pregnant,” he said, with a proud grin.
