All the Ostentatious '90s Outfits In Showtime's 'On Becoming a God in Central Florida'
If you, like me, are fascinated with bizarro cults and back-alley schemers—and if you can stomach watching a man get eaten alive by an alligator in a swamp—please immediately check out Showtime's insane new dark comedy On Becoming a God in Central Florida.
On the heels of hits like Breaking Bad and Ozark, the series shows the immense lengths a person will go to to achieve their so-called American Dream. OBAGICF explores this theme by unapologetically nosediving into absurdism with its fictitious multibillion-dollar multi-level marketing company joined by anti-heroine Krystal Stubbs (masterfully played by Kirsten Dunst) after her husband (Alexander Skarsgard) dies by gator. In the pilot episode, Krystal exacts revenge on the beast, still donning her funeral attire, with a shotgun.
The absurd show takes place in Orlando circa 1992, which means viewers are treated to some wonderfully nostalgic fashion from costume designer Stacey Battat of The Bling Ring and Country Strong.
"I love the Bongo advertisements of the 80’s and 90’s and Bongo in general from that time served as a huge inspiration," Battat told ELLE.com. "Krystal wears a lot of vintage Bongo on the show. We searched high and low to find the pieces used in the show. We went to vintage stores, costumes houses and scoured online resources. One of the best resources we had was Levi’s authorized vintage which re-issues vintage Levi’s.”
In fact, the looks curated by Battat in this show are so good, I'd personally like to own almost every article of clothing that Krystal wears. From Canadian tuxedos to high-waisted mom shorts, here's some of the character's best outfits—and how to replicate them.
Canadian tuxedo
Krystal Stubbs was wearing Canadian tuxedos in the early '90s—long before former couple (but forever icons) Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake showed up in matching head-to-toe denim outfits to the 2001 VMAs. And the look still holds up today. Jaden Smith has rocked the all-blue aesthetic. Gigi Hadid has shown she is a fan. And Rihanna was billed the 'Reigning Queen of the Canadian Tuxedo.'
Printed jacket-skirt sets
Jelly shoes aside, the best thing to come out of last millenium's style-trends were matching mini-skirt sets. It makes getting ready in the morning so much easier. No fussing, no "I have nothing to wear with this!" As Krystal shows above, a jacket-skirt set is also versatile. Sure, wear a floral denim jacket and matching skirt out to lunch or to meet up with a friend. But why not also throw it on to give a speech?
Swimsuit-as-a-top
Krystal knows how to channel her inner VSCO girl, which basically makes her the most popular girl in school right now. VSCO is the latest teen lifestyle-fashion trend that involves looking beach-ready, while also being eco-friendly.
Rhinestone-studded sunglasses
Not only does Krystal own sparkly sunshades (a flashy accessory we said will "take your summer selfie to the next level" back in May), but she also wears them inside—which some find rude, but I think makes you seem intimidatingly cool.
