Over 60 Meat Products Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

The affected products include bacon, hot dogs, sausage, and some deli meat.

If you purchased ready-to-eat meat products recently, it's time to check the labels. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday that over 60 ready-to-eat meat products had been recalled due to possible listeria contamination.  

The affected products were sold by the Illinois-based company Behrmann Meat and Processing, Inc., and packaged between July 7 and September 9 of this year. 

The 64 products that may have been contaminated with the bacteria will have the establishment number “EST 20917” inside the USDA mark of inspection. As per the official statement, the recall could be expanded, and officials urge customers to check back frequently for updates. 

The affected items were shipped to both retail locations and wholesale distributors in Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri and are reported to include:

• Cured Hocks

• Cured Callie Hocks

• Cured Bone-In Ham Whole

• Cured Bone-In Ham Steaks

According to the FSIS, consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a severe infection primarily affecting older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant people, and their newborns.

Listeriosis can cause common food poisoning symptoms (fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, gastrointestinal upset) and lead to more severe complications in the case of invasive infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates around 1,600 people become ill with listeriosis every year, resulting in about 260 deaths. It is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems.

As of writing, there have not been any confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions from eating the products. However, the FSIS still urges anyone who bought the affected items to throw them out or return them to where they were purchased.
