Golf influencer Paige Spiranac responds to body shamers: 'It's hard to maintain my ideal weight'
Paige Spiranac is speaking out about body shaming comments she received on her recent Instagram post.
The former professional golfer and social media influencer, 29, took to her Instagram Stories earlier this week to share that she received negative comments about her body on one of her golf swing videos, which she has become known for online. In the since-expired story, according to People, the athlete wrote, “Honestly, the amount of men calling me 'fat' on this post is next level lol. I've had to delete so many comments which I almost never do.”
While she said she knows her body is a part of her “brand,” she said “it's hard to maintain my ideal weight all the time year after year” and that she has to work hard to diet in order to maintain a slim physique.
"It doesn't come naturally to me,” she continued. “It can be defeating when people call out my body insecurities."
She also put out a call to her audience for others to share their own body insecurities, and specifically called for men to step up.
"I know I have a male dominated audience and wanted to open up the floor to hear about your experiences with body insecurities," she wrote. "I don't think it's talked about enough how men are also body shamed. We all feel the pressure to look a certain way."
In addition to defending herself from body shamers, Spiranac has also spoken out about people who have criticized her for posting photos of herself that they deemed too revealing. In March 2021, she made headlines when she posed online in a green jacket — sans shirt underneath — ahead of the Masters. Instead of appeasing the haters, she used their criticism of her cleavage to sell merch.
"I made some towels with this image and other prints inspired by The Masters,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. "Link in bio if you want to buy or for the haters to dry their tears with."
In January 2021, she also took to Twitter to express her frustration with impossible beauty standards.
“It’s crazy I can be told I look too fat, too skinny, too plastic, too old, wearing too much makeup, not enough makeup, boobs too big, butt not big enough, too pale, hair too blonde, not blonde enough all in one day,” she tweeted. “Guys it’s not a build a bear workshop over here. Calm it down.”
