Pete Davidson Revealed on ‘The Tonight Show’ That He Purchased the World’s Surplus of Unopened VHS Tapes

Pete Davidson stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his hosting duties on the 49th season premiere of SNL. During his stop, Davidson revealed to host Jimmy Fallon that he bought the world’s reserve of unopened VHS tapes in anticipation of their mounting value, and plans to become rich off his investment.

"I started collecting VHSes that were sealed in the box like three years ago, ‘cause I was really high one night," Davidson admitted. "Listen to this, guys: In 2026, it'll be 20 years since the last VHS was made, right? So 20 years goes by—that's enough time for people to be like, 'Oh, that was cool, remember?' Like vinyl? So I bought all the sealed ones that exist—like, three to five thousand tapes."

Fallon then displayed photographic evidence of unsealed VHS tapes (and even more unopened boxes) for the incredulous audience. "As of a month ago, sealed VHSes are now going for 20 to 30,000 grand a pop!" the Dumb Money star exclaimed. "Rocky just sold for $27,000. It's my GameStop. I own all of them, dude! Dude, no one believed in me! It's gonna happen, you guys!"

A Rocky VHS did recently sell for $27,500, but its seller was Massachusetts-based collector Jay Carlson, not Davidson as some outlets have reported. Based on a cursory glance at the titles in Davidson’s collection, he may have a harder time turning a profit.

Of the VHSes pictured, the most expensive title is the Sonia Braga drama The Last Prostitute, which you can pick up for $26.49 before taxes and shipping on Amazon. Other films in Davidson’s box, like 1983’s Blue Thunder and Alan Parker’s Birdy, cost $12 and $3.49, respectively.

Luckily, Davidson has prepared himself for any inevitability. "Dude, if it doesn't work, I'm going to be on the road forever,” he told Fallon. Let's hope it works out better than his purchase of an old Staten Island Ferry boat.
