Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot is “Weird”

The next Pirates of the Caribbean is “weird,” according to its screenwriter.

"We pitched it and thought there's no way they're buying it, it's too weird,” Craig Mazin tells The LA Times on bringing the fantasy pirate film to Disney. “And they did! And then we wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone's waiting around.”

Mazin is currently one of the most sought-after writers, best known for penning HBO disaster miniseries Chernobyl, and more recently, HBO post-apocalyptic video game adaptation The Last Of Us.

He’s not the only one detailing what to expect from the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Jerry Bruckheimer, who has produced all five entries in the series, recently told ComicBook how challenging it is to bring together a film of this scale.

“You don't know how they come together. You just don't know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

Bruckheimer’s words suggest an all-new adventure with an all-new cast. That likely means Johnny Depp’s iconic Captain Jack Sparrow won’t return, but given his fading star power over recent years, giving fresh actors the chance to shine seems the smartest way forward.
