This New Premium A?ejo Is a Blend of Tequilas Aged in 4 Different Types of Barrels
Tequila continues to dominate the spirits market in America, but there are actually a few that are not backed by celebrities worth checking out, if you can believe it. One of these is Mijenta, which just released a new limited-edition a?ejo expression that was aged in four different types of barrels.
Mijenta A?ejo Gran Reserva was first released in the spring of 2022, and took all of a week to sell out its initial run. The key to this tequila’s flavor is that it’s aged for a total of 18 months in four different types of casks, with each liquid matured separately and then blended as opposed to a finish or moving the liquid from barrel to barrel. The barrel types are as follows: American white oak and French oak barrels to “help develop flavor profile and texture;” acacia barrels to “enhance the body while adding a light herbal and citrus note;” and cherry casks to “enhance the fruity notes.” The official tasting notes describe dried stone fruits and spices on the palate, along with vanilla, coffee, and cooked agave.

Mijenta is a relative newcomer to the tequila category, having been founded just a few years ago in 2020. The focus of the brand is on sustainability and producing high-quality tequila that does not use additives to augment the flavor or color. It’s currently produced at Destiladora de Los Altos in Jalisco under the supervision of maestra tequila Ana Maria Romero Mena. “Creating our A?ejo Gran Reserva is a labor of love and that process cannot be rushed,” said co-founder Juan Coronado in a statement. “We have been eagerly anticipating the moment when we are able to share the next batch and are excited the time is finally here where consumers will be able to again savor the craft, artistry and authenticity of this incredible expression.”
The new Gran Reserva (SRP $200) is available to purchase now from online retailers like Drizly, along with other expressions in the portfolio.
