Prince William turns heads in green velvet blazer and turtleneck: 'The next James Bond'
They're both British natural blonds who answer to Her Majesty. Is it any surprise, then, that Prince William is taking style cues from Daniel Craig?
Two weeks after the outgoing James Bond turned heads in a raspberry velvet jacket for the world premiere for No Time to Die, Prince William — who also attended the 007 event — stepped out in his own take on the velvet menswear trend. Marking a stark contrast from his typical blue or gray suits, the future king attended London's Earthshot Prize 2021 ceremony on Sunday in a hunter green blazer accented with an emerald pocket square and paired with a black turtleneck and matching trousers.
Though velvet suits, as seen on Craig and Jake Gyllenhaal of late, are having a GQ-worthy menswear moment, William's jacket is actually an oldie. He previously wore the Reiss piece, with a more traditional white button-down shirt and bowtie, to a 2019 charity gala.
The 39-year-old prince was accompanied by wife Kate Middleton, who hit the environmental awards ceremony's green carpet in a decade-old lilac Alexander McQueen gown from her existing wardrobe in keeping with the spirit of sustainability. (Sunday marked the very first annual Earthshot Prize, launched by William and David Attenborough, which will recognize those who have created solutions to help the environment.)
Though the duchess is generally considered to be the fashion plate of the two, William's look caused quite a stir on social media, where the couple's official royal team shared photos from the green carpet.
"The name’s William... Prince William. Very suave!" read one of several comments comparing the royal to James Bond and Craig.
"I vote for Prince William to be the next Bond villain. In that velvet jacket he would definitely look the part," read another, while one commenter tweeted, "I vote for Prince William to be the next James Bond!"
"William: 'I’ll show that velvet-wearing Bond who said my wife looked jolly lovely…………'" joked another commenter.
That's a Bond villain outfit if ever I saw one. https://t.co/6TEPGcdG9p
