Prince William Sends a Personal Message to the English Football Team Ahead of the Euro 2021 Final
It's no secret that Prince William is a soccer fan—he's an avid supporter of the Birmingham-based team Aston Villa. This week, he shared a personal message to England's football team, who just qualified for the European Football Championship for the first time ever.
"What a game, what a result! A huge team effort @England," the prince wrote on the Kensington Royal Twitter account he shares with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge. "The whole country will be behind you on Sunday," he wrote, referring to the upcoming final, ending his tweet with the famous English football mantra: "It's Coming Home."
William has been showing his support for the home team throughout the Euro finals. He and Kate Middleton joined spectators at Wembley Stadium last week to watch the team beat Germany at the quarter-finals. And this week, he returned to the stadium solo, to watch the team again emerge victorious in their semi-final match against Italy—Kate was unable to attend as she is self-isolating following a coronavirus exposure.
William will likely be the only royal in attendance at the championship's final match on Sunday, when England will face off against Italy. According to the Express, he might present the trophy to the winning team, in his role as president of the Football Association (FA).
In an interview with Hello back in 2015, William opened up about his love of football, and how Aston Villa became his favorite team. "A long time ago at school I got into football big time," he explained. "I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn't want to follow the run of the mill teams," Will said. "I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments."
