Princess Eugenie Shows Off Her Engagement Ring
With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding only a few weeks away, it's easy to forget that there's another regal celebration in the mix. That is until you see Princess Eugenie of York's massive engagement ring out on the streets of London. Seriously, that sparkler could (and did) stop traffic.
Prince Andrew's daughter went out for dinner at the Bluebird Café in Chelsea earlier this week, and while her affordable Zara coat and simple skinny jeans kept it casual, the enormous pink padparadscha sapphire attracted plenty of attention.
The gold ring features a halo of diamonds surrounding a coral-colored gem. Named after a lotus flower with a similar hue, padparadscha sapphires mostly come from Sri Lanka, and they're especially rare and coveted for their unique pink-orange glow.
When Princess Eugenie debuted the piece earlier this year, the ring instantly drew comparisons to the sparkler her mom Sarah, Duchess of York, received from dad Prince Andrew in 1986.
Her father had chosen the Burmese ruby to complement his bride's red hair. Her fiancée Jack Brooksbank did it a little differently; he and Princess Eugenie designed this ring together after he proposed.
"Why I loved it so much is it changes color from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie," the 31-year-old wine merchant told the BBC. "She changes color, and it's just so amazing."
The couple originally met in 2010 at a Swiss ski resort and now live in London. Brooksbank used to manage the nightclub Mahiki and has since remained in the hospitality industry. Princess Eugenie, 28, works as the associate director of an art gallery. As the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, she's ninth in line to the the throne but does not carry out official royal engagements.
The longtime couple plans to wed on October 2, 2018 in St George's Chapel - the same venue as her cousin and his American bride.
