Having a professional do your makeup can make you feel confident and amazing. Being left with an acne flare-up just hours later? Not so much. Singer-songwriter John Mayer shared that he experienced a major breakout.

On Sunday evening, he shared a video on his Instagram account, saying: “OK, so here’s the deal. My skin was fine. I do an interview. They put makeup on to somehow get me ready for television, but then I get zits from the makeup, which just sends me on a makeup loop, I guess. I just want to cover up this one now.”

Mayer is no stranger to beauty babbling and has taken to social media to vlog his personal routine. But, this time around, he’s looking for answers. And we’re here for him.

Yahoo Beauty has some tried and tested products, as well as a few suggestions (we have some experience here), for Mayer to help him avoid future breakouts. Scroll down to see our top picks.

Aveeno Positively Radiant 60 Second In-Shower Facial Cleanser
First and foremost, before applying any makeup, you have to start with a very clean base to avoid an acne flare-up. This in-shower solution is great even on the most sensitive skin. Squirt about a quarter-size amount on your hands, massage it on, and let it sit for one minute. Follow with a rinse for skin that’s supersmooth and fresh. ($6.99, Target.com)

Neutrogena SkinClearing Oil-Free Makeup
Constant use of heavy foundations does not always agree with your skin. Just like anything else on your body, your facial skin needs to breathe and be treated. Neutrogena’s SkinClearing Oil-Free Makeup helps to take a little worry out of the process, with its light texture and blemish-fighting ingredients, such as salicylic acid and MicroClear technology. Sometimes the makeup you’re wearing has nothing to do with that annoying pimple that pops up after you’ve taken it off. It could be the types of tools you’re using to apply it. Crafted by dermatologists and plastic surgeons, this brush has patent-pending “Heavenly Skin” hair infused with good-for-your-skin add-ins such as peptides and antioxidants. ($48, sephora.com)

Proactiv has a cultlike following for its skincare products for a reason — it has the power to clear breakouts. Once the brand came out with makeup, anyone with acne-prone skin rejoiced. This concealer palette conceals uneven skin tone while treating your skin at the same time. ($21.95, proactiv.com)

Renewed Hope in a Jar Skin Tint
Think of this as a red carpet version of your favorite drugstore-brand tinted moisturizer. It helps to hydrate the skin and keep it glowing while protecting it. The SPF 20-infused sunscreen reduces the chance of any skin damage or age spots, which can lead to blemishes. ($39, philosphy.com)
