A Proposal Just Happened at the Emmy's–And We Are All Weeping
The most romantic thing on the planet just happened on stage at the 70th Annual Emmy Awards. Glenn Weiss, the director of the Academy Awards, received the award for directing for a variety special at the Emmy's, and began his speech by thanking his two daughters, explaining he loves them more than they'll ever know.
Sweet, but that was just the beginning. Upon winning his 12th Emmy, Weiss gave an ode to his mom, who passed away two weeks ago. "Part of my heart is broken; I don't think it will ever be repaired...Mom always believed in looking for the sunshine in things, and she loved my girlfriend Jan." He then went on to address Jan, who was sitting in the audience, and told her never to lose her sunshine. At this point we were already tearing up. Then, Weiss shocked us all; "You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife." Chaos ensues and we are all weeping.
Cue the madness. Leslie Jones is screaming. Benedict Cumberbatch is stunned. Betty Gilpin is crying along with Claire Foy. Weiss exclaims: "I haven't even asked yet!" as Jan is lead to the stage, past stars, nominees, winners and peers. Weiss apologizes to the guys in the control room, explaining that he's going to need a minute–if anyone, he knows that he's just caused complete and total mayhem up in the director's booth. Javier Bardem is clapping with more glee than a child on Christmas morning.
Weiss then proceeds to place the ring his father "gave his mother 67 years ago," explaining that his mother and Jan's parents are both there with them watching from above. After placing the ring on her finger, he realizes that he hasn't formally gotten on one knee, or waited for her to try to accept his proposal fighting through tears. As he drops to one knee, the crowd–and we at home weeping on our couches–go wild.
Jan is speechless, we all are speechless. The Oscars just got one-up'd by the Emmy's–by the man who directs the Oscars. Oscars, your move.
