Does Josie and Archie’s Breakup Mean We Will Get a Varchie Prom Moment on Riverdale
Warning: Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18 and 19 spoilers ahead.
No one knows heartbreak quite like Varchie stans, who had to endure the couple's breakup earlier this season and watch as both sides of the couple shacked up with new baes. But, I'm here to tell you that all hope might not be lost, because the most recent episodes of Riverdale made it seem like a Varchie reunion isn't completely out of the question. Honestly, Riverdale writers, this is a warning: don't play us, because if you bring Veronica and Archie back together only to rip them apart again, I honestly don't know if my heart will be able to take it. But if you say that Varchie is endgame, I'll believe you.
Anyway, as we await next week's ep to see what lies in Varchie's future, let's check out every clue that points to a beautiful Ronnie and Archiekins reunion.
1. Jarchie is officially over.
Jarchie was fun while it lasted, but now Josie is off to pursue her dreams and she is leaving Riverdale behind, meaning she’s leaving Archie behind as well. Of course, their breakup isn’t all bad. It, of course, leaves the possibility of a Varchie reunion wide open (you know, once that complicated Veggie situation gets sorted out). This also means that Archie now needs a prom date, and if Archie and Veronica don’t go to prom together and get crowned homecoming king and queen, then the Riverdale writers will be getting a strongly worded email from me.
2. Veronica helps Archie and Mad Dog after Randy’s death.
Once Archie and Mad Dog get arrested for possession of drugs, Veronica posts their bail right away (with no interest in a plan for repayment). She then jumps right into action in order to clear the two boys’ names, setting up a drug test for them and holding a press briefing. Later, she even gives up a night of profit at Le Bonne Nuit to hold a benefit for the Ronsons, all to help Archie clear his conscious, making me think Veronica has an ulterior motive in all of this. I mean, she can’t date Archie if he’s in jail or preoccupied with guilt, right?
3. Archie gets back in the ring for Veronica.
Following the death of Randy, Archie vows to stay out of the boxing ring forever, but he later breaks that vow when Veronica convinces him to. She gives him a very inspiring pep talk, ensuring to him that he isn’t “Riverdale’s reaper,” like Elio said. In actuality, he’s the town’s “red hope.” She asks him to get in the ring for her, giving him an adorable smile complete with an eye bat. It’s enough to convince Archie to keep boxing, proving that Veronica’s opinion means a lot to him.
4. Veronica is willing to get tied up with Elio again in order to help archie.
Elio is a super skeevy character, who has already burned Veronica before, so I'm sure she wants to avoid him whenever she can. Despite that, Ronnie agrees to get involved with the baby mob boss in order to help out Archie and his gym by getting them into the Gilded Gloves boxing tournament.
To do so, not only does Veronica invade a men's steam room, but she also helps Archie threaten Elio and his boxer Randy on local television. All because she wants to see Archie succeed, how sweet!
5. Veronica takes up the position as promoter of the El Royale boxing club.
Veronica has a lot on her plate. She's the owner of Pop Tate's AND Le Bonne Nuit, as well as a high school student dealing with her parents' brutal divorce. Despite this, Veronica is willing to take on ANOTHER job, as the promoter of Archie's boxing club. It's unclear if this will be a permanent position or if she just did it for the Gilded Gloves tournament, but either way, it proves that Ronnie is willing to do a lot to help her Archiekins.
6. Veronica Spoils Archie before his big fight.
While Veronica came from money, everyone knows that she has since been cut off by her father, and between running two businesses and paying off debts to both Hiram and Gladys, she isn't exactly rolling in the dough. Despite this, Veronica is willing to spend a lot when it comes to Archie. Not only does she let him rack up a pretty large tab at Pop's (we assume he isn't paying for all those burgers), but she also buys him that gorgeous new customized boxing outfit, which couldn't have been cheap.
7. They have a major moment.
Speaking of the boxing outfit, after Ronnie gifts it to Archie, the two share a pretty intense moment. Archie thanks his ex for believing in him, to which Veronica responds, "No matter what happens, I want you to know that, I'm always in your corner."
Then, Varchie shippers around the world held their breath as the ex-couple seemed like they were about to embrace in a kiss...before Veronica pulls away and rushes out of there.
Immediately after Veronica leaves, Archie seems very reflective about the whole thing, and while I do not claim to be a mind reader, it seems like he was thinking, 'damn, I miss her.'
8. Fred knows what's up.
Of course, Fred caught the close kissing call and he makes a comment to Archie about it, because what else are dads for? When Archie assures his father that he and Veronica are simply friends, Fred does not buy it for one second. "Uhuh, yeah. Friends," he says, saying little, but at the same time, so so much.
9. Even Josie Senses it.
Josie attends her boyfriend's match (yeah, in case you forgot, Archie is still dating Josie), and sits next to Veronica. Of course, she immediately recognizes her boyfriend's snazzy new boxing outfit and asks Veronica about it. Her reaction when she finds out that Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe aka Veronica is Archie's new sponsor is pretty priceless. In fact, it's my new favorite reaction meme:
10. Ashleigh Murray is joking about it too.
The scene above is obviously important because Ashleigh Murray (AKA Josie McCoy) posted about it on her Instagram story in anticipation for the episode.
She wrote across the picture, "2 girls + 1 boy," so yeah, something is about to go down! And zoom in on that gif in the middle of them, which just adds to what Josie must be feeling about this situation. Yup, I'm expecting a love triangle in Riverdale's future (honestly, it could be a love square if we count Reggie).
11. When they broke up, it wasn't because they no longer loved each other.
Archie and Veronica's breakup was heartbreaking. First of all, they broke up over the phone initially, which is just not what that relationship deserved. Then, when Archie returned from his soul searching jaunt in the woods, they got together again for a hot second, you know, before Veronica accused Archie of shooting her father.
But the two obviously still love each other, and despite their new relationships, the connection remains, as made obvious in episode 18. I would be very surprised if this season ended without one more Varchie backslide into bed at the very least.
