Quaker Parrot’s Trust in Shiba Inu Is the Definition of Friendship Goals

Just like us humans do, sometimes our pets develop the most unlikely friendships. Take Jewel and Rocket for example. Jewel is a Quaker Parrot and his brother is Rocket, a Shiba Inu. You would think that the two of them would get along like oil and vinegar, but you'd be wrong.

The two have developed quite a friendship, and it's pretty amazing to see. Their humans shared a video of one of their interactions on Sunday, September 15th, and you have to see it to believe it. Watch on as the parrot climbs into the dog's playpen to say hello.

It's crazy to see how gentle the Shiba Inu is with the parrot! The dog puts its mouth around the parrot like he's going to bite it, but doesn't, and the parrot doesn't seem to mind at all. It's amazing that the bird has that kind of trust in the dog!

People loved Jewel and Rocket's interaction. @Breanna pointed out, "The way Jewel reminds himself " it's a baby" LOL!" and Jewel's mom replied, "From Day 1 he called Rocket a baby. Anytime we touched him he would say it." Another commenter added, "I love how the puppy is so gentle with the cute bird." and I laughed at mom's response, "It’s such a surprise because he literally demolishes everything else. He's a demon. LOL!" One commenter said what I was thinking, "Goals right there!" and mom's reply was unexpected, "Haha and they became friends on their own!"

Can Dogs and Birds Be Friends?

Can dogs actually get along with birds? After seeing this video, the answer is a clear yes. Hepper explains, "Dogs may not buy each other flowers and take each other out on dates, but they do appear to form close bonds with each other—and with different species—in ways that look similar to how we would define love." Jewel and Rocket may not love each other, but they certainly seem to be besties.

The Quaker parrot clearly trusts the dog, and the dog seems to know that if he wasn't being gentle, he could hurt the bird. Dogs express love in a number of ways. They may nuzzle into you or lean against you, much like Rocket did in this video. They may lick your face and hands, or gently nip at you like Rocket does. Dogster explains that licking is a gesture of, "trust, closeness, and companionability. Licking releases endorphins, one of the brain’s happy chemicals, creating a positive emotional exchange for both the dog and the recipient." Pawing is another way that dogs show affection or that they want attention.

Birds show affection by grooming, sharing their food, nuzzling, and by getting close to you or other animals. Coming into a dog's cage shows a level of trust that must be the equivalent to love. It's all very sweet! The BFFs' mom does say in the comments that she always closely monitors them and doesn't leave them alone together as a precaution. It's a good reminder for all pets, and one that also reminds us that it's always better to be safe than sorry.
