Queen Margrethe's 80th Birthday Party Will Gather Royals from All Over
No one throws a birthday party like the royals—especially when they're celebrating a big year. Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who will turn 80 on April 16, is set to the be the latest royal to go all-out on her birthday celebrations. Here's what we know so far about her multi-day festivities.
It won't just be Danish royals in attendance.
Royal birthdays often draw blue-blooded attendees from around Europe, if not from around the world. According to the blog Gert's Royals, the Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Princess Beatrix are all confirmed to take part in either the events on the 16th, or both the 15th and 16th. It's also rumored that King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium will be there on the 15th, and further RSVPs are likely to continue trickling in.
The celebrations will be spread across several days.
Margrethe's "Birthday program" will consist of events stretching from April 2 all the way to early June, according to the Danish royals' official website. The main festivities, however, will take place on April 15 and 16.
On the 15th, children from Denmark's municipalities will celebrate Margrethe at Christianborg Palace in the morning, and in the evening, the Queen will host a gala dinner at the palace featuring a "variety of entertainment." The 16th features more public activities: the Danish royals will appear on the balcony of Christian IX’s Palace, after which Margrethe will ride in a coach to Copenhagen City Hall, where she'll also appear on the balcony. That night, there will be "dinner and dancing" at Fredensborg Palace.
Preparations have already begun.
On Instagram, the Danish royals shared photos of some new chairs at Christiansborg Castle—a birthday present for Margrethe, and to first be used for her 80th birthday festivities.
