Quick-thinking 7-year-old saves grandmother's life after health scare

A 7-year-old from Tennessee is being credited with saving her grandmother’s life and for facing her fears during a life-threatening situation.

According to Tennessee news station WCYB, Lelah Bernard and her grandmother, Linda, are inseparable. “I love her so much, but she thinks that she loves me more,” Lelah told the outlet. “She says it’s impossible that I love her more.”

Lelah’s love and dedication to her grandmother were on full display during a scary life-threatening blood sugar drop in the middle of the night. Lelah woke up just before 2 a.m. and found her grandmother slumped over, WCYB reports.

Lelah, who is typically a shy girl, put on her boots and coat and walked a fifth of a mile to a neighbor’s house for help. The granddaughter, who typically doesn’t go anywhere alone, asked her neighbors to call 911.

“This was a big step for her to take,” Ketron Elementary’s school secretary, Gail Bedford, said. “To go outside of the house, down the hill at two o’clock in the morning to the neighbors’ house.”

Lelah stayed with her neighbors for two hours while paramedics worked to revive Linda. At 4 a.m., first responders drove her back home to her grandmother.

“They said, ‘Your little girl went to the neighbors’ house and asked them to call 911.’ I was totally shocked,” Linda said. “I just praise the Lord that I’m still here with her. I need her and she needs me.”

When Lelah returned home, she told the outlet that she ran to the door “and gave my Mamaw a hug, a big one.”
