Reflections of Hunger exhibit highlights eating disorder struggles
JOPLIN, Mo. — An exhibit called “Reflections of Hunger” is happening at the Joplin Public Library.
It’s the 3rd year for the exhibit and features artwork personally created by those struggling with eating disorders or body image.
Ozark Center officials say it’s a unique way to better educate people.
Local artist, Desiray Laidler has a couple of pieces on display.
“I didn’t know how to explain what I was going through — in words — and so, I just painted it and it kind of helped me get through that time of my life. If I would have — if you would have told me a year ago that I was doing this — I would have freaked out — because I didn’t feel open to talk about this. I feel like through treatment, through my team of support groups, I feel like I’ve been able to come out of my shell and speak about this — and the more I speak about this to different people, the more common I feel like it is, especially with girls my age,” said Desiray Laidler, exhibit creator.
“There’s a lot of myths and misunderstandings about eating disorders — and I think it’s important that we start to hear it from them — rather than the experts, so that they can really understand — this is something that impacts our families and our loved ones in our communities,” said Dr. Jenny Copeland, licensed psychologist/Ozark Center Reconnect Eating Disorder Treatment Team Leader.
Copeland says someone passes away from an eating disorder every 15 minutes.
The exhibit runs through October 24.
