Ladybugs have long been considered a symbol of good luck—but you might not feel so lucky when you find them in your home! While they actually aren't harmless to humans or plants, having a swarm of ladybugs indoors can be quite a nuisance. We spoke with an expert to understand why ladybugs invade homes and effective methods to eliminate and prevent them from returning.
Why do I have ladybugs in my house?
Ladybugs, also known as ladybirds or lady beetles, typically seek shelter indoors during the fall and winter months. According to Lowe's store manager Brian Shaunfield, there are several reasons why ladybugs might find their way into your home.
"Ladybugs are attracted to light and heat, which often draws them indoors," explains Shaunfield. "Additionally, tree branches and shrubbery close to your home provide pathways for ladybugs to enter. Poor drainage systems, particularly from roofs or lawns, also create a welcoming environment. Moreover, cluttered areas like garages or basements offer hiding spots for ladybugs and other insects."
Ladybugs can enter through small openings around windows, doors, vents, and even through cracks in your home's foundation or siding. Once inside, they gather in large groups in areas that provide warmth and protection, such as attics, wall voids, and window frames.
Are ladybugs harmful?
In general, ladybugs are not harmful to humans or plants. They don't bite, sting, or spread diseases. In fact, they are considered beneficial insects because they feed on aphids and other plant-eating pests, making them valuable for natural pest control in gardens.
However, in large numbers indoors, ladybugs can become a nuisance. They may stain surfaces with their yellowish secretions and emit a foul odor when disturbed. Some people might also experience allergic reactions to ladybug secretions.
How to get rid of ladybugs:
Getting rid of ladybugs can be managed effectively through a combination of prevention and removal techniques, Shaunfield says.
"Securing the entry points of your home is critical," he notes. "Consider pets, high-traffic areas and the amount of storage in your home when choosing a solution that works best for you."
Here's a step-by-step guide:
Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home for small cracks, gaps, and openings around windows, doors, vents, and utility penetrations. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal these entry points and prevent ladybugs from entering.
Repair Screens: Ensure that window screens are intact and without tears or holes that could allow ladybugs to enter your home.
Vacuuming: If ladybugs have already entered your home, use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to gently suck them up. Empty the vacuum bag or canister promptly to prevent them from escaping.
Trap and Release: Create a simple trap using a light-colored bowl filled with soapy water placed near windows or light sources. Ladybugs are attracted to light and may fall into the water and drown.
Use Insecticides: Consider using an insecticide labeled for use against ladybugs if the infestation is severe or persistent.
Professional Help: If the infestation is overwhelming or you're unsure about handling pesticides, consult a pest control professional.
Preventative Measures: To prevent future invasions, keep vegetation trimmed away from the exterior of your home, maintain good drainage, and keep indoor areas clean and clutter-free.
There are also a few natural solutions for keeping ladybugs at bay.
"Outside of pesticides, there are many natural ways to deter ladybugs from entering one’s house and insects in general," Shaunfield says. "You can spray neem oil at entry points of the home. Other oils such as lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, and citronella can be diffused and sprayed as well. Those trying to deter ladybugs can also look for algae dust or soap salts, which can be sprinkled along entry points of a home."
By combining these methods, you can effectively manage and eliminate ladybugs from your home for good.
