'Riverdale' star KJ Apa's car accident highlights the dangers of driving while drowsy
TV and film sets are known for their long, grueling workdays, many of which include 12+ hours. Well, things might be changing after Riverdale actor KJ Apa was involved in a car accident after leaving a 14.2 hour day on set.
KJ reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and hit a light pole, destroying the passenger side of his car. This scary accident has caused protests on the set of Riverdale, as shoots for the show frequently “last until the early morning hours, and the cast and crew are not provided transportation to and from set.” It is being reported that several actors have confronted producers about the transportation policies for the show, which they believe have contributed to an “unsafe work environment.”
Warner Bros. Television released a statement saying, “KJ has repeatedly been informed about making production aware if he is tired or feels unsafe [after work], and if so, either a ride or hotel room will be provided for him.” The statement continues by saying that “the studio policy of providing a car service or taxi — as well as a nearby hotel room — upon request to any cast or crew member was announced at the start of production this season and is reiterated periodically in notices attached to call sheets.”
SAG-AFTRA announced that it would be investigating the Vancouver set following Apa’s dangerous crash. The union said, “this is an extremely troubling situation and we are deeply concerned about the safety of performers on this production.”
Do you think there should be new rules and regulations on long workdays?
