How to Rock a (Royal) Topknot Like Meghan Markle
Topknots are one of those trends that come and go, but we have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of them now thanks to a certain duchess who stepped out in a sleek iteration earlier this year. And though most of us are already well-practiced in tossing our hair up, we consulted an old tutorial by George Northwood, the stylist behind the bun, to up our game to royal proportions.
Step 1: Prep your strands with some dry shampoo before using a fine-toothed comb to back-comb your roots to create maximum volume.
Step 2: Tie your hair up into a high ponytail that sits on top of your head. (Northwood notes that you should be able to see it when you’re looking straight on in a mirror.)
Step 3: Back-comb the lengths of your ponytail to beef it up some more before coiling it into a knot. Remember: The bigger the hair, the better the knot.
Step 4: Twist your tail into a bun and secure it into place with pins. Then, using your fingers, gently tug on the hair just in front of the knot to add volume and create a more flattering shape at the crown of your head.
Step 5: Finish with a light mist of hairspray and practice your wave.
