Rosalynn Carter, 96, Officially Enters Hospice Care Amid Dementia Battle

Former first lady, Rosalynn Carter, 96, has entered hospice at her Plains, Ga., home just six months after her dementia diagnosis.

Her grandson, Jason Carter, announced the news via X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Nov. 17.

"She and President Carer are spending time with each other and their family," the statement, shared via the Carter Center's X account, read in part. "The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support."

News of Rosalynn entering hospice care came six months after Jason announced she was diagnosed with dementia.

"She continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying spring in Plains and visits with loved ones," the Carter Center revealed on May 30 via X.

Rosalynn's family released a longer statement in May regarding her lasting legacy.

"Mrs. Carter has been the nation’s leading mental health advocate for much of her life," it read. "First in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, then in the White House, and later at The Carter Center, she urged improved access to care and decreased stigma about issues surrounding mental health."

The statement also noted that one in 10 older Americans have dementia.

It continued: "We recognize, as she did more than half a century ago, that stigma is often a barrier that keeps individuals and their families from seeking and getting much-needed support. We hope sharing our family's news will increase important conversations at kitchen tables and in doctor’s offices around the country."

Meanwhile, former President Jimmy Carter, who turned 99 on Oct. 1, entered in-home hospice care in February.

"After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention," an X statement read on Feb. 18. "He has the full support of his family and his medical team."

In February, on his personal X account, Jason tweeted, "I saw both of my grandparents yesterday. They are at peace and—as always—their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words."
