How Rumer Willis Is Doing Motherhood Her Way

As Rumer Willis watched parents Bruce Willis and Demi Moore act in countless roles—and even joined the family business, making her debut in 1995's Now and Then—she always knew there was one she was destined to play: mom.

“It was never a question for me,” the Sorority Row star, who turned 36 on Aug. 16, told People in March. “I always knew.”

In April 2023, Rumer and musician boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas welcomed daughter Louetta Isley Thomas Willis. And it appears fate had a hand in helping the couple choose the name.

"We were thinking about the name Loretta, and it was a typo,” the Rumer Has It Founder noted to the magazine last August. “Her dad and I were texting, and he left the 'R' out of Loretta, and it was just Louetta. I was like, 'Oh, I love that!'”

Though, the moniker also has deeper meaning.

“I have always loved the name Lou so was thinking of that for both a boy or a girl,” Rumer wrote on Instagram Stories in December, “but then when we found out she was a girl we came up with Louetta. We wanted to give her options and my dad’s favorite singers are Lou = Louie Armstrong, Etta = Etta James, Isley = Isley Brother.”

As for how Bruce—who also shares daughters Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30, with ex Demi as well as Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10, with wife Emma Heming Willis—feels about being a grandpa?

“He’s a girl dad through and through,” Rumer told Today in May about the Die Hard actor, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia last year. “It almost unlocks that little kid, girl dad thing. He’s so sweet with her—how I saw him with my sisters, my little sisters and her.”

And Demi is loving being grandma to Louetta, too.

"She's just a pure joy," the Ghost actress told E! News in January. "It really is all the clichés. You get all the fun and joy, and you get to go to bed early and have a good night's sleep."

However, Rumer isn’t following the same script as her mom when it comes to raising her own daughter.

"We're in such a different time, there's just so much more information," she told E! in May. "My mom will be like, 'You should do this with her,' and I'll say, 'Actually, based on what I've been reading, you don't do that anymore.'"

Not that The House Bunny alum is claiming to have it all figured out. She’s just determining what works best for her and her little one.

"When you're in that transition from maiden to motherhood, and you have a really tight relationship with your mom, there's an interesting separation that occurs as you are discovering your own path as a mother," Rumer added. "There are things I take from her that I love, but there's also stuff I want to discover myself."

As she joked, “Inevitably, we screw up our children in opposite ways, right?”

And as she carves her own path, Rumer is keeping her fans updated—posting about breastfeeding, loving her “mama curves” and family moments.

“Becoming a mother has been the portal I always knew it was and yet so much more than I ever imagined,” she wrote in part of a May Instagram tribute to Louetta. “Growing you in my belly and watching you grow this last year has been the privilege of my life my tiny tender, strong, hilarious, fiery, wild child you and the sweetest most loving being I have ever known.”
