Saints fan helps disabled Giants fan stand for the anthem, proving that football still brings Americans together
The National Anthem has been drawing a lot of attention at football games recently, but no matter how you stand politically it’s comforting to know that when one football fan sees another who needs assistance, he’s not afraid to help. Even if that means supporting your opponent.
A picture taken by photographer Michael DeMocker of NOLA.com the Times-Picayune has gone viral, shared over 14,000 times since being posted on Facebook. Taken at a game Sunday in which the New Orleans Saints faced off against the New York Giants, the photo shows one of the Saints faithful helping a disabled Giants fan stand for the duration of the National Anthem, delivered by Grammy-nominated singer Shemekia Copeland, at MetLife Stadium.
According to the NOLA.com Facebook page, “What you’re seeing is the pre-game clock counting down to first quarter. The picture was indeed taken during the national anthem.”
It’s common for fights between opposing fans to go viral, but it’s nice to see them interacting respectfully before a game they all love.
People were quick to share that exact sentiment.
The Saints defeated the Giants 33-18, their third win of the season.
