Salt & Stone, a brand that’s won over the public’s affection with “high-performance skin care from the sea,” has recently expanded its cult-favorite Saffron & Cedar fragrance line, and it officially launched at Sephora today for your winter enjoyment (not to mention early Valentine’s Day shopping needs!).
More from WWD
The Saffron & Cedar scent — which feels like a drive along the coast with all your windows open as it starts to rain, punctuated by notes of neroli, surf wax, oakmoss, and sugarcane — was introduced by the brand last October, by way of a candle. The success of that launch was followed by forays into the worlds of body wash, deodorant, and bar soap, all done in the trending scent. As of this week, you can also shop the scent in a body mist, ripe for layering with the aforementioned body care products to calibrate the intensity of the fragrance.
Salt & Stone’s returning customers and newbies to the brand alike were instantly hooked, giving the new fragrance rave reviews on TikTok. Those who have enjoyed Saffron & Cedar’s sea-inspired glory back in its candle days even went as far as comparing it to the scent profile of Baccarat Rouge 540, a luxe Maison Francis Kurkdjian perfume that’s similarly been trending for years (albeit with a much steeper price tag attached).
There are, indeed, marked similarities between the fragrances — including the presence of jasmine, cedarwood, and saffron notes that come together in a collaboration of the warm and the spicy — but Salt & Stone’s Saffron & Cedar wins bonus points when it comes to being incredibly well-balanced.
As Claire Sullivan, our Senior Beauty and Lifestyle Commerce Editor, puts it, “Saffron & Cedar smells far more expensive than it actually is, and, across the different formats available, I find that the scent has a nice strength to it — it’s noticeable but not overpowering.”
“The neroli top note is balanced out nicely with sweetness from sugarcane and grounded with cedarwood, while a subtle hint of jasmine gives it that classic effect I look for in a signature scent,” Sullivan adds, providing yet another reason for adding Salt & Stone’s Saffron & Cedar to your fragrance wardrobe.
When I personally tested it out in natural deodorant form, the scent was a bit more faint than what I’m used to (read: Old Spice men’s deodorant), but this made it more compatible and fit for layering with the perfumes I usually wear. All of which is to say — you won’t give your coworkers a massive headache when you show up to the office doused in the fragrance, so its power lies in this very subtlety.
Los Angeles–based Salt & Stone was created by former snowboarder Nima Jalali, who built the brand from the ground up by keeping a connection to the natural world at the heart of all they do. Their product lines across scents contain active ingredients from the sea (think kelp or seaweed) and mountains, powered by antioxidants and nutrients meant to nourish skin on a cellular level.
This environmental focus is also evident in Salt & Stone’s packaging, crafted out of upcycled ocean plastics, and the fact that they tap into renewable solar and hydroelectric energy for manufacturing. Since 2017, the brand has been within continuous earshot of TikTok users and those off social media alike — making waves via expansions and launches, yes, but also collaborations like the one with Leon Bridges, who in 2022 helped develop a Salt & Stone fragrance based on his song “Blue Mesas.”
Considering how sophisticated Salt & Stone’s scents are (which, besides Saffron & Cedar, currently include Santal & Vetiver; Bergamot & Hinoki; Black Rose & Oud; and Neroli & Basil), each of their products is seriously well-priced, with refill purchase options and mini set offerings available for those who are either in love with a particular scent or don’t know which one to commit to quite yet.
The release of the Saffron & Cedar product line at Sephora is causing waves of excitement right now. For die-hard fans of Salt & Stone (we consider ourselves card-carrying members of this club, by the way), this means the Saffron & Cedar collection is now eligible for Sephora Beauty Insider benefits, as well as inclusion in seasonal sales events and related Sephora-only programs. That’s not to say Salt & Stone never puts out discounts directly on its own site, like it’s currently doing for the Signature Scent Duos among other selects. Yet, we have a good feeling Sephora markdowns on top picks from Salt & Stone might be even juicier and more incentivizing. No, you’re not dreaming.
Those obsessed with Saffron & Cedar’s ability to teleport individuals straight to surfing destinations of choice — without ever leaving home — should hurry to shop the line’s Sephora release. Many items have already started accumulating “Loves” taps, which is a handy way shoppers can signify they’re interested in an item and save it for a later buy. Case in point: The Saffron & Cedar Body Wash with Niacinamide + Probiotics is presently sitting at over 150 heart ratings, and the all-new Saffron & Cedar Body Mist (which was an exclusive-to-Sephora launch, for the record) is bound to generate even more hype, so make sure they end up making it off your wishlist and into your bathroom by grabbing the gorgeously scented products today.
