Savannah Guthrie Defends Megyn Kelly's Interview
It was the most cringeworthy moments of the week: During one of the first ever episodes of Megyn Kelly Today, Kelly asked Jane Fonda about plastic surgery - and Fonda was not having it. Fonda herself later said it was a “weird thing to bring up” in the moment, especially when her costar Robert Redford was sitting right next to her. But two broadcasters who know the celebrity interviewing game came to her defense, saying they would have done the same thing.
On Thursday night’s Watch What Happens Live, Today show host Savannah Guthrie answered a viewer’s question about her colleague's first week. “I think it’s great. I think she’s got the eyes of the world upon her, and I think everybody can relate to, you know, how nerve-wracking that is, but I think she’s awesome,” she responded, defending her new coworker. “I think the show looks fantastic - it’s like, I mean, it looks beautiful - and we’re thrilled to have her. And she’s doing a lot, I mean, she has a lot of things she can do, she has a lot of range, and I think she’s awesome.”
Host Andy Cohen also chimed in, arguing that Kelly’s Jane Fonda questioning was totally normal of a TV host. “I think she got a bad rap with the Jane Fonda thing, personally,” Cohen said. “I would have asked that question. I have asked that question!”
“I think I’ve asked that question, too,” Guthrie said. “You know, sometimes you ask questions in an interview, and, you know, live TV, there’s lots of awkward moments all the time.” Watch the moment below:
