Yes, we know that it seems a new celebrity skincare line launches every week. And yes, we know you're probably rolling your eyes at yet another collection fronted by a famous face. But we've tried Scarlett Johansson's new line, called The Outset, and it's truly divine (plus, if there's one famous face you associate with gorgeous skin, it's this one, right?)
Johansson spent five years developing the line and shepherded the project through her pregnancy with son Cosmo, born last summer. While the mom of two has promoted fragrances in the past, she had no desire to attach her name to a product line that had nothing to do with her.
"That would give me anxiety, because I just don't do that in any other aspect of my life," she says. "I just couldn't do it."
Johansson's own skincare regimen has always been streamlined, with a focus on cleansing and moisturizing. She's dealt with acne in the past, so she doesn't like to play roulette with what she puts on her face. She keeps it simple, and her shockingly affordable line (Johansson calls it "everyday effective") does the same.
The mission of The Outset is to give folks a clear, simple way to take care of their skin. The line is composed of just six products: cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream, collagen serum and night cream. And so far, the feedback has been glowing, quite literally. "Loving this light night cream. It’s very hydrating and nourishing and a little goes a long way!" raved one Sephora reviewer. Another wrote that the cleanser "left my skin feeling super clean and removed any dirt and oil from the day and make up."
The brand is transparent about ingredients, and Johansson has learned a lot from the pros she works with: "I didn't know half of what I was putting on my face forever," she says. "I mean, I had creams that I used for 10 years. And then our product developer was like, ‘Let me just pull it apart.' She was like, ‘You're putting gasoline on your face.’ I just had no idea that products that present in a kind of clean, pharmaceutical way are made up of so much crap. But you don't have to be full of all that crap to be effective. I learned that along the way."
Johansson and her team are not looking to add products that would complicate things, or potentially cause adverse reactions. They're staying true to their reasons for launching The Outset.
She explains: "I love an acid peel," for example,"it's just not my lane. I want the line to be able to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. And that kind of stuff's not for everyone. I think we'll stay with our brand ethos."
