The New Season of ‘Last Man Standing’ Won’t Talk About One Polarizing Topic
Tim Allen’s sitcom, Last Man Standing, is premiering its new season on Fox this fall after ABC abruptly canceled it last year. And though fans cried foul, saying ABC nixed the show because of Tim Allen’s conservative politics, the show won’t specifically talk about President Trump. At least for now.
During a panel at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, executive producer Kevin Abbott said, “I don’t think we’re going to comment specifically on Trump.” Allen joked, “Oh, yes we will.”
The show’s creators say that even though the main character is a Republican, that doesn’t mean the show is about politics. “Mike Baxter is a conservative, a Republican, he holds those ideals,” Abbot said, according to Variety. “The central character has a more conservative [view, but] we don’t really do issues of the week. We consider ourselves a family show with a traditional character at the center of it.”
Mike Baxter is “kind of a centrist” anyway, Allen said. "This guy is a practical guy," he added, CNN reports. "He owns a big business. If it's helping his business, he's probably pro-Trump. He probably doesn't defend him."
Allen said everyone involved in Last Man Standing wrongly assumed Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election. “The night that Trump pulled it off, forget the politics, those of us in comedy went, ‘Shoot!’ because now we don't have all that pantsuit stuff,” Allen joked, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Just the jokes, that she would find funny as well. That’s the comedy side of it. We want both sides to think it’s funny.”
