Skratch Labs Cookie Mix Makes Dessert an Essential Part of Your Training Plan
I was a bit confused when Skratch Labs introduced its cookie mix. I love Skratch: It’s a Colorado-based company and I’m a homer; its drink mix is the best; I use its cookbooks several times a week (dammit, where’s The Feed Zone Two, Alan and Biju?).
But cookie mix? Cookies are dessert. WTF do they have to do with riding (except as rewards)?!
But then I read this explanation on Skratch’s website: "Homemade cookies from Skratch are a great alternative to prepackaged energy bars. Compared to most energy bars, cookies are nutritionally similar and easier to eat and digest because they’re simpler, have more moisture, and lack excess ingredients.”

You’re telling me I can eat cookies while I ride a bike, and it’s a good thing? Take my money!
Skratch Cookie Mix is a neutral base, with a bit of oats, and cinnamon and vanilla flavoring. You’re supposed to add the fixins you like. I made mine with dried cranberries, chocolate chips, and pecans. Skratch provides recipes on its site if you’re feeling unimaginative.

(The mix is non-GMO, dairy free, vegan, and kosher: The ingredients you mix in determine if it remains all those things.)
Egg, butter, mix, fixins, bake. Easy: fresh cookies—sorry, energy bars—in half an hour. I made mine in a 9x9 pan, cut them into squares, and wrapped them to take along on rides.
They’re great: very tasty, and nice treats on a ride. Basically, I made my own “energy bars” and they were fresher and more personalized than anything prepackaged. Mine turned out a bit dry, though; they would be easier eat with a bit more moisture.
Skratch Cookie Mix is $8.50 for a box. I got 16 good sized bars out of my 9x9 pan, which works out to a bit more than 50 cents per bar: much cheaper than most prepackaged stuff.

But this is just basic cookie mix: flour, sugar, oats, leavening, vanilla, and cinnamon. You probably have all this stuff in your kitchen at home already and don’t need this mix to make your own energy bars. Skratch Cookie Mix is great, but really what it offers is simply convenience (less measuring), and you pay a premium for that.
