Sophia Loren Speaks Out Following Hospitalization and Surgery
Italian actress Sophia Loren wants fans to know she's doing A-okay after a fall in the bathroom led to a fractured hip and femur.
Her agent, Andrea Giusti, shared a statement from the Man of La Mancha star with the Associated Press on Tuesday, Sept. 26, in which she sent her thanks to all of her well-wishers in the aftermath of the incident and assured that she's on the mend.
“I thank everyone for the closeness and affection that they are showing me," the 89-year-old said. "I am better, just have to do rehabilitation and give myself a period of rest.”
Loren had reparative surgery on Sunday, Sept. 24, the same day she took the spill in her villa near Lake Geneva, Switzerland, where she's lived for decades according to the publication.
The BBC reported that the fall caused several "serious" fractures across her hip and thigh, and her sons Carlo and Edoardo Ponti were there to support her during her hospitalization.
According to CNN, Loren was scheduled to inaugurate the newest branch of her chain of restaurants in Bari—joining locations in Milan, Florence and Rome Fiumicino—on Tuesday. It's unclear if the event was postponed or went on without her.
The Sophia Loren Restaurant's official Instagram account was the first to report her fall on Sunday, revealing that she had already seen a "positive outcome" following her operation, according to the social media platform's translator feature, and that she was facing "a short period of recovery" and was "follow[ing] a road to rehabilitation."
Their statement continued, "Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon."
