‘Stranger Things’ Star Opens Up About Addiction and Journey to Sobriety
When Stranger Things Season 4 premiered in June, Jamie Campbell Bower gained major attention for his intense, dark character. But now, he is getting honest about his personal dark times dealing with addiction.
The actor, who plays Vecna (A.K.A One and Henry Creel) in the hit Netflix show, opened up about his "active addiction" 12 years ago and the many struggles he endured on his journey to sobriety..
Bower wrote on Twitter, "12 and a half years ago I was in active addiction. Hurting myself and those around me who I loved the most. It got so bad that eventually I ended up in a hospital for mental health. I am now 7 1/2 years clean and sober."
He then touched on how everyone makes mistakes, saying, "For anyone who wakes up thinking 'oh god not again' I promise you there’s a way. I’m so grateful to be where I am, I’m so grateful to be sober. I’m so grateful to be. Remember, we are all works in progress J x."
Fans responded positively to Bower's honest message, with many saying how "proud" they are of the actor.
Some also shared their struggles with sobriety, with one fan writing, "i’ve been 2 years sober and knowing i’m not alone and my feelings are understood means so much."
Another person admitted that Bower helped them through tough times, noting, "I'm so incredibly proud of you jamie, you have been helping me get past some mental health struggles recently so this is helping me so much, I love you."
Bower got a lot of attention recently for portraying the villain that battles Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in Stranger Things, but he appeared in many famous franchises previously, including Twilight as Caius and Harry Potter as Young Gellert Grindelwald.
It's unclear if Bower will return in Stranger Things' final season.
