Striking Footage Shows Home Falling into River in Alaska After Massive Flooding
Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, is currently experiencing flooding as a result of a glacial break, leading multiple houses to completely collapse into the river in striking video footage.
A local resident named Sam Nolan shared a video with ABC News of a house across the Mendenhall River that fell into the water in a heap. The flooding occurred after Suicide Basin, a side basin on the Mendenhall Glacier, had a dam break, opening up a flood of water from the glacial lake.
Nolan said of the house collapsing into the river, "It was really sad to see, but all we could do was stand there and watch." He noted that he and those he was with watched the structure for more than an hour as it succumbed to the floods.
People everywhere are reacting to the shocking video, with many commenting words of support and sympathy for those who lost their homes.
"Not even my house and this hurt to see ????," said one person.
"Omg that’s so heartbreaking ????? I hope everyone got out," wrote another.
After some questioned why the house was "built that so close to the river," someone who claimed to be a local resident clarified, "the house was built almost 100 feet from the river a glacial dam broke and flooded the town," explaining that the flooding expanded the river so much that it quickly reached the house's edge.
Supermodel Christie Brinkley reacted to the video as well, stating, "I’m sorry for the family who lived here. I wonder how many family homes we will see wash away before we decide to work together to reduce fossil fuels and the carbon causing climate chaos?"
The National Weather Service shared that Suicide Basin has been releasing glacier lake outburst floods since 2011.
