These Superhero Show Actors Are Also in 'Ozark' Season 3
The launch and development of Disney+ effectively ended the world of Netflix's Marvel Universe, which means fans of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders all had to look elsewhere for future entertainment. Fans of Fox's Gotham, which also wrapped up last year, also had to be looking to get their fix. Luckily, one of Netflix's most popular and exciting shows, Ozark, features quite a few familiar faces from those worlds, particularly in the newest season of the series, the show's third. The series focuses on Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney), who are navigating a crime-centered, midwestern adventure of money laundering and dark, criminal acts.
And while neither Bateman nor Linney have been in a superhero movie or series (well, Bateman was in Hancock back in 2008, but that's slightly different), a number of the actors playing characters they come into contact with along the journey have dabbled in that world. So while there might not be superheroes with keen hand-to-hand combat skills, or supernatural, otherworldly detective crime-fighting skills, there are instead backwoods drug deals and sketchy financial arrangements. Basically the same thing, right?
Below, we take a look at the actors who've doubled-dipped both in Ozark and in some of the superhero worlds that you are probably coming to miss right about now.
Tom Pelphrey is the most intriguing newcomer in Ozark's third season, playing Wendy Byrde's duplicitous younger brother. Pelphrey is no stranger to playing characters with malicious intent, though, as he also played the villainous Ward Meachem, the chief villain to hero Danny Rand in Iron Fist on Netflix.
Skylar Gaertner is a key player in both Ozark and Netflix's Marvel Universe. In the former, he plays Jonah Byrde, the son of Marty and Wendy who's slowly but surely immersed into the family business, and also slowly but surely showing a bit of a violent streak. In Daredevil, he plays the young Matt Murdock in flashbacks, giving viewers glimpses into how the superhero became who he is.
With two Academy Award nominations to her name, Janet McTeer is in the top tier of actors in both Netflix's Marvel Universe and the Ozark roster; only Vincent D'Onofrio (Daredevil), Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage), and Bateman and Linney even come close.
But she plays memorable roles in both worlds as well. In the second and third seasons of Ozark she plays Helen Pierce, the loyal and powerful no-nonsense lawyer for the Navarro drug cartel who becomes a loyal ally to the Byrde family. In Jessica Jones, she plays Alisa, mother of the titular hero who gets killed—then brought back to life with superpowers. A different type of power from Ozark, that's for sure!
Not technically Marvel, but Charlie Tahan also has experience in the superhero television genre before his time as the intellectual Wyatt Langmore on Ozark. On Gotham, he played the young version of Dr. Jonathan Crane, who eventually becomes the villainous scarecrow. You probably remember this character as played by Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan's films, and Tahan does a good job in the FOX series that concluded in 2019. On Ozark, Tahan's Wyatt is one of the show's most important characters too.
Jessica Frances Dukes is another new addition to Ozark for the show's third season. Her character, Special Agent Maya Miller, gives major Marge Gunderson from Fargo vibes as a visibly pregnant investigator looking to get to the bottom of the Byrdes' Casino situation. Dukes was also featured in Jessica Jones as Grace, the co-host of the in-show radio show with Trish Walker, Jessica's best friend.
As Darlene Snell, Lisa Emery might just be the most sociopathic and insane character in Ozark—which is really saying something. Violent and hot-headed to no end, she is a ticking time bomb who constantly has the characters around her—and viewers watching—nervous.
In Jessica Jones, she's more empathetic, but equally troubling: as Kilgrave's mother, she's responsible for the experiments that eventually saved him from his brain disease, but also allowed him to become the show's terrifying villain.
