Filing and paying taxes is always a pain, but this year, the passage of the Republican-backed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act promises to change the game. Many are upset about the law because of the generous tax breaks it offers the rich while short-changing those who are struggling — including many millennial women. The events have been organized by Tax March, which organized protests in 2017 demanding that President Donald Trump release his tax returns. Unlike last year, this year’s marches will focus on speaking out against the new tax law and the ways it benefits the rich. The Tax March movement’s website states that “any reform to the tax code should be about closing loopholes for the wealthy and big corporations and building an economy that invests in working families”

In case you need a refresher, the biggest change brought by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was a reduction of the corporate tax from 35 percent to 21 percent. As for individuals, the effects of the new tax law won’t be felt in full until 2027. According to analysis from the Brookings Institute’s Tax Policy Center, all income groups will see tax cuts over the course of the next 10 years. But by 2027, 53 percent of Americans will be paying more in taxes than they were prior to the passage of this new law. And those in the two lowest income brackets will actually be taking home less money post-tax than they were before the new law. Additionally, the law repealed the individual health care mandate that was passed by President Barack Obama, which could cause health care costs to go up.
