Team USA Closing Ceremony Flag Bearer Announced
The Olympic Closing Ceremony is inching closer and it’s time to get excited about another round of celebrations, performances, and another Team USA flag bearer! Jessie Diggins was named the flag bearer after Team USA athletes voted to give the honor to the 26-year-old record-breaking cross-country skier.
The baking enthusiast is a two-time Olympian, and she won Team USA’s first medal in the women’s cross-county skiing competition along with teammate Kikkan Randall, who has attempted to medal 18 times. Diggins cinched the gold medal (America won eight golds this year) during the team freestyle event when she edged out the Swedish team by 0.19 seconds. NBD! It also gave America its second medal in the event - the first was a silver medal won in 1976.
Diggins shared her excitement about being the flag bearer in a statement this morning.
“This is such an incredible honor for me. I’m really humbled and moved that the athletes voted for me. It’s so inspiring to feel the support and cheering from everyone. The coolest thing for me about the Games has been getting to meet other athletes on Team USA, and getting to cheer them on at their events and learn about what they do. I have so much respect and admiration for everybody here and am beyond honored to be able to lead us out of these Games.”
Diggins will also be America's first cross-country skier to be a flag bearer during the Closing Ceremonies. She’s making history everywhere she goes!
