It’s nearly impossible to address everyone’s individual hair needs. You could have thick, unruly hair that’s color-treated and oily — and it’s hard to find products that address all of those characteristics. Or maybe you have fine hair that’s been damaged after years of daily heating tool use, and you’re looking for a conditioner formula that softens your strands but doesn’t leave them limp and weighed down. Again, hard to find in a single bottle.
Which is why customized haircare came about, and Prose is the most well-known and trusted. But is it worth the hype? Read on to find out.
About Prose & How It Works
Prose customizes hair products based on specific needs and hair type. You start by taking a quiz on the website to decipher what you need in a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, and more. From there, the brand puts together a list of specific ingredients to nourish and revive your strands — you can even pick your scent! From there, you can choose how frequently you want the products delivered. You can choose from every four, eight, or twelve weeks and cancel at any time.
My Experience Testing Prose
I was dealing with some hair thinning and frizz, as well as overall dullness, so I needed all the hair help I could get: This led me to test out Prose’s offerings, and I spent three weeks testing the products.
After I took the Prose haircare quiz, I really liked that it created a whole line completely tailored to my needs. Shipping was also so fast! I loved that my package came with the prettiest bottles, all labeled with instructions and the specific steps to use them. Each product came in apothecary-like packaging that looks amazing in my shower.
I was at first overwhelmed by the hair care, but then quickly shocked by how easy it was to use. I started with a pre-shampoo hair mask, then shampoo, then a conditioner, and followed it up with a curl cream that made my hair so silky smooth. In the first week, the only change I noticed was that my hair wasn’t as dry, which was a win! Three weeks later, I’m losing less hair, and my frizz is controlled. Dare I say it looks shinier too?
My Honest Thoughts About Prose
Overall, I was impressed with Prose. It really feels like I created a whole system for my hair — like a chemist! But what’s really something to rave about is how well the products clean your hair and actually work. I chalked it up to the highly researched ingredients the brand uses. Speaking of ingredients, here’s what the products include:
Custom Shampoo: Made to cleanse and protect, and revive and stimulate. The shampoo includes jojoba oil, plum, avocado oil, pepreptemint extract, and hyaluronic acid to name a few.
Custom Conditioner: The conditioner enhances my curls and shine. It’s crafted with fermented rice water for smoothing, grape seed extract for anti-breakage, and maracuja oil for hair health.
Custom Pre-Shampoo Mask: The pre-shampoo mask contains jojoba oil, oat oil, silk proteins, mango butter, and castor oils to make strands healthy again.
Custom Curl Cream: This cream helps increase shine and protect against heat. The formula is made with argan oil, lilac extract, and pequi oil for anti-frizz.
I also love the fresh eucalyptus scent my products have, which will keep me replenishing my custom set month after month.
As you can see, my strands went from looking dry and frizzy to healthier and more textured. It also feels a lot more nourished (it’s softer and more supple) — and thicker, too.
How Much Does Prose Cost?
Depending on your custom set, Prose ranges from $29 to $53 monthly. And if you buy the products separately, it costs $29 or $34 for a shampoo or conditioner, and $41 or $48 for a hair mask. Where a set of personalized hair care from the brand is $53 monthly. Plus: Get 50% off your first order.

Who Is Prose Best For?
Prose is best for anyone looking for cleaner haircare formulas that check several “hair issues” boxes, with ingredients that address more specific needs than standard products. There’s a formula for every hair type (from thinner textures to curly and coily locks), so it’s very likely you’ll find the right products for your needs. I will note that Prose is best for folks who are OK with following a haircare regimen: In order to see the best results, it’s recommended to use all of the products sent to you, which may be more than just the standard shampoo and conditioner you’re used to. For instance, I also ended up incorporating a hair mask, which added about 10 minutes of care time to my routine — but ultimately, it was worth it, and I got better results.
Is Prose Actually Worth It?
Now that I’ve tested the products, I can confirm that Prose hair care is worth it. After purchasing designer hair care for years and spending $80 to $100 on shampoo and conditioner, this set at $52 is a steal. Not only is it an affordable-ish option if you’re looking to revive your hair, but it actually delivers results for all of your hair concerns, a feature that most traditional options don’t offer.
Does Prose Help Regrow Hair?
“Prose haircare products contain customizable ingredients that help fortify hair and create healthy conditions for hair growth,” says Dr. Brendan Camp, board-certified dermatologist of MDCS Dermatology. “While they may not actually stimulate increased hair growth, ingredients like antioxidants, botanicals, and hydrators keep scalp skin and hair healthy to optimize growing conditions.”
Is Prose a Clean Brand?
Good news! If you’re a clean beauty lover, Prose’s formulas are certified “clean” and chemist-vetted. According to the brand, hair care products are made with natural ingredients and are free of harmful ingredients like sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, alcohol, and GMOs. “They are also cruelty-free, carbon neutral, and certified B-corporations,” their website states.
How Long Does It Take to See Results Using Prose?
According to Dr. Camp, many reviews of Prose products note improvement after 30 days of use. “Keep in mind that scalp hair grows slowly, roughly one centimeter per month, so results may not be immediately noticeable,” he adds.
