The top 5 spring fashion trends of 2024 you're going to see everywhere this season, according to an expert
I chatted with a trend expert to get the scoop on the biggest spring 2024 fashion trends you can shop for now — think tiered dresses, ballet flats and more.
Spring is just around the corner, which means it's the perfect time to take stock of your wardrobe and figure out what you need — and what you need to get rid of. Luckily, there are plenty of new spring 2024 fashion trends to try out and — spoiler alert! — they're all super wearable. To help get your closet ready (and mine!), I rounded up five spring fashion trends that you can expect to see everywhere this season with the help of Kendall Becker, the fashion director at Trendalytics.
Becker told me that wardrobe basics are being upgraded with interesting yet wearable details for spring: "Look for mesh flats or a blazer with a tied waist." Romantic touches are also on the agenda. "We’re seeing rosettes and bows continue to trend as well as tiered dresses. Plus, the return of lace and maxi-length hemlines," said Becker. Feminine details and a dash of romance? Sign me up!
If you're ready to say goodbye to winter and start prepping for warmer weather, scroll down to learn more about these must-have style trends. I've chosen pieces from Nordstrom that'll help you nail each look — the fashion retailer just dropped tons of spring staples that you will want to shop ASAP.
1. Oversized bags
I, for one, love a big bag. Not only does it hold everything I need for the day including my laptop, chargers and current read, but there's always room to add in last-minute groceries or a little treat. "Oversized bags are whimsical as well as practical," explained Becker. "People are on the go again — whether that means heading to the office or on a spring break escape."
This croc-embossed tote is not only reversible to a solid red shade (cute!), but the set also includes a smaller crossbody. It's like a 3-in-1 bag, which makes it a win-win-win.
This perfectly slouchy leather bag from Coach has two detachable straps and comes in signature shades like black and cream. However, this more unique stone color is our top choice since you can wear it year-round.
Trust me: You'll reach for this canvas tote all spring and summer. It has pockets for all of your essentials so it can hold everything you need — and keep it all organized. Don't let the light hue scare you off. Hand wash it with cold water and mild soap when needed.
2. Tiered dresses
Is there anything better to slip on during the warmer months than a flowy dress that doesn't cling? I don't think so. A flirty, tiered style is not only fashionable but comfortable and forgiving, too. While the top of the dress may be more fitted, the flowing tiers give the dress movement and dimension. "There’s an undeniable romance in the air for the spring season between bows, rosettes and tiered maxi dresses," said Becker. "The trends are feminine and sweet."
Everyone needs a floral print dress for spring. This flirty shirred-waist midi from Vince Camuto features cap sleeves and a ruched bodice. It looks great with heels, but my favorite way to style it is with white sneakers and a jean jacket.
Your closet probably already has a little black dress or two that are evening-appropriate, so your warm-weather wardrobe deserves a floaty version you can wear during the daytime! Plus, since wrinkles hardly show on this style, it's the ideal vacation dress to toss in your suitcase.
This sweet midi dress is unbelievably flattering. We can't get enough of the tie-back, sweetheart neckline and bubble sleeves. The design fits true-to-size and also comes in teal, cream and black.
3. Special flats
PSA! Ballet flats are here to stay. But they don't have to be boring or basic! "We’re seeing this staple style upgraded with cool elements like ruching, mesh, metallic colorations and square toes," said Becker. "There’s an option for you no matter what your style." A pair of pretty flats is a great way to mix things up if you typically live in sneakers and flip-flops during the spring and summer. You'll be shocked at how elevated they can make a casual outfit look.
These apple red flats are both elegant and fun — the squared-off toe and bow are sweet additions to an otherwise classic shape. Plus, at under $100, this leather design is an absolute steal.
Yes, metallics are neutrals! These flat silver slingbacks can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. You can also shop the style in six other colors if silver isn't your thing (but it's our top choice!).
These leather Madewell flats are the perfect hybrid between standard ballet flats and Mary Janes. They come in black, but this chocolate brown feels so fresh. The brand describes them as a "comfy classic" and we'd have to agree.
4. Fresh neutrals
Those who tend to keep a subdued palette in their closet will love this next trend — updated neutrals! Think of it as livening up your basics and giving them the credit they deserve. "In addition to the tried-and-true neutrals, a fresh set of colors like muted pink, buttercream yellow and slate grey are joining the near-neutral palette," Becker explained to me. This spring, keep your eyes out for toned-down pastels, as well as crisp earth tones.
A trench coat will keep you both dry and stylish on those rainy spring days. This timeless design features a removable tie belt, double-breasted buttons and notched lapels. Score it in this muted green or a more classic tan shade.
It's an unspoken rule — your closet can never have too many basic tees. This one from Madewell comes in sizes XXS-XXL and has a classic crewneck fit. Shop it in six different colors including a pretty pale yellow,
Lean into those coastal grandmother/Nancy Meyers vibes with this oversized black and white striped sweater. I love it with shorts, jeans or over a dress — the options are endless. After all, what's better than looking chic and feeling comfortable?
5. Light blue
After such a focus on pink in 2023 (we're looking at you, Barbie movie!), Becker said the fashion world is shifting its sights to blue — and we're totally here for it. "Light blue was a mainstay on influential runways like Fendi, Proenza Schouler and Gucci," she added. Another plus: Light blue looks gorgeous on everyone regardless of skin tone. There's something about the calm yet striking shade that effortlessly brightens every complexion right up.
A silky satin skirt is way more versatile than you think. Wear it with heels for a fancy Saturday night dinner or try it with white sneakers and a tee for a more casual vibe during the day.
Perfect for the office, a baby shower or brunch with friends, you'll want to wear this puff sleeve dress 24/7. Neutral pumps or open-toed sandals complete the look.
Light blue looks great on every skin tone, so this soft cotton tee is a no-brainer buy. It also comes in nine other hues if you're looking for additional colors. The top's three-quarter sleeves are ideal for early spring days with cooler nights.
