Thief caught on camera stealing 14-year-old boy's cancer medication
A porch pirate was captured on camera stealing a package while a Nevada family was away — a package that contained a 14-year-old boy’s chemotherapy medication.
Gage Haynes, who was only 6 months old when he was diagnosed with a rare cancer, takes eight Rydapt pills a day. The drug has changed his life but isn’t easy to obtain, as it is not FDA-approved for anyone under the age of 18.
“I have systemic mastocytosis,” Haynes told Las Vegas’s KLAS-TV. “It’s a rare form of cancer and it’s just been happening my whole life, so I’m used to it. Now we’ve finally found a way to help it. My whole life there’s really been nothing.”
Stacey Shavinsky was shocked when she realized someone had come onto her property to steal her son’s medication.
“I got upset,” Shavinsky told the outlet. “You’re not just taking pants or a shirt — you’re taking something that’s keeping someone alive.
“I worked really hard to try and get him that,” she added. “I did financial assistance because it costs $40,000 a month.”
Haynes and his family said they just want the medication returned.
“It really helps me out a lot,” he said. “I would feel a lot better, so I can go to school, get good grades, get a job, so just please return it.”
The thief has yet to be identified, but the family is hopeful that someone will recognize the man. In the meantime, Shavinsky is working with a pharmaceutical company to get assistance for her son.
