Three Kansas City Chiefs Fans Froze to Death in Their Friend's Backyard and No One Knows Why
Family and friends of three men who were found frozen to death in their friend's Kansas City backyard are looking for answers, as the series of events leading up to the horrific discovery remains a mystery.
David Harrington, 37, Ricky Johnson, 38, and Clayton McGeeney, 36, were found on the evening of Jan. 9 at their friend's home, a full two days after they had been there to watch the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 7. Police responded after the fiancée of one of the men requested a welfare check, at which point they discovered the body of one of the men on the back porch while the other two were found in the backyard.
The game, which had been the last of the regular season, took place in California, a week before the Chiefs' home game on Jan. 16 in what went down as one of the coldest games in NFL history. However, temperatures remained in the low 30s on Jan. 7 and 8, and didn't plummet into the teens until the afternoon of Jan. 9, adding another layer of mystery to the circumstances.
Yet, authorities are not investigating the deaths as foul play.
"First and foremost, this case is 100 percent NOT being investigated as a homicide," Kansas City Police Captain Jake Becchina told Fox News Digital. "There have not been any arrests [or] charges, and no one is in custody. There are no specific threats or concerns for the surrounding community at this time. The resident at the house was cooperative with detectives the day the deceased were discovered." Becchina added that toxicology reports should be available within the coming weeks, and it's presently unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Be that as it may, those close to the deceased have spoken out on social media claiming things don't add up, as the home's resident was at home for the entire two days that his friends were apparently dead in his yard. They say he ignored concerned messages from those looking for the whereabouts of the men and didn't seem to be aware that their vehicles were still parked on his street.

"This man was inside his home alive while my friends were dead in his yard for lord knows how long," wrote Kaylee La Tier, an associate of the men, in a Facebook post. "They were all hanging out since after the game Sunday. He KNEW people were looking for them. He read messages of people searching for him on Tuesday."
"My husband banged on his door for 20 [minutes]," she continued. "My friend banged on his door and then busted a window and yelled and announced her presence while she's inside and still nothing from him? Then the cops come 10 [minutes] later and he comes out nonchalant in his boxers with an empty wine glass in hand??! Nothing is adding up. Dave, Clay, and Ricky need and deserve justice."
John Picerno, an attorney representing the man living at the home, claims that his client had "no knowledge" that his friends were freezing to death on his property and that he didn't know they were in his backyard until police knocked on his door. He said that the man was sleeping with headphones with a loud fan on when friends broke into his home, and didn't see messages until after police arrived.
He also said that his client didn't think it was "unusual for his friends to have left their cars there overnight."
"When he would have people over at his house, yes sometimes as people, they get tired, they’re people that are very close to you and you feel comfortable going to bed and allowing them to leave when they want to leave," Picerno told Fox 4 News. "None of us know what happened to these individuals and I think the most important thing to remember here, these are his three buddies."
Picerno likewise confirmed that the man has since moved from the home, and that an unidentified fifth man was also there that night. But his role in the series of events, if any, is unclear.
