All of the Times Meghan Markle Has Worn Princess Diana's Jewels
In less than a year as a member of the Royal Family, Meghan Markle has worn quite a few of Princess Diana’s jewels. But with the bulk of her huge collection still unworn, there is a lot of anticipation for the delights that 2019 may bring us.
In Diana's years as a member of the Royal Family, the Princess had access to one of the world’s largest jewelry collections. She also amassed a huge private collection of jewelry, which was inherited by her sons. Now that both of them are married, pieces from that collection are starting to reemerge on both Markle and Kate Middleton. Here, a look at the jewels Meghan has worn from her late mother-in-law's collection so far.
When Kensington Palace announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle back in November 2017, everyone anxiously awaited to see the engagement ring unveiled at the subsequent photocall. The gold ring featured a large diamond from Botswana, where the couple had one of their earlier dates. Prince Harry said, “the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this on this crazy journey together.”
It's unknown if the diamonds were just hanging loose in the late Princess’s jewelry box or come from another piece, but they're definitely cherished.
Just hours after her wedding to Prince Harry at St George’s Chapel, the new Duchess of Sussex stepped out in a stunning Stella McCartney gown. But it was the large aquamarine glittering on her finger that caught everyone’s attention as the couple drove from Windsor Castle for their evening Reception at Frogmore House.
The Duchess’ aquamarine ring was in fact a piece from her late mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales, who commissioned it from the British jeweler Aspery in 1996 around the time of her divorce from Prince Charles. She notably wore it at a private viewing and reception at Christie’s before the auction of some of her gowns for charity and at a dinner in Sydney later that year.
The aquamarine ring was inherited by Prince William and Prince Harry after their mother’s tragic death in 1997, and after being worn by the new Duchess at her wedding reception, it was worn again at a dinner hosted by the King of Tonga during the couple’s Tour of Oceania last October.
Princess Diana paired this slim diamond bracelet with the aquamarine ring at the Christie’s auction of her gowns, just like her daughter-in-law would do over two decades later. It was also worn at a Dinner to raise funds for The Anti-landmines Campaign at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington just two months before her tragic death.
Meghan's Tonga dinner was not the first time the Duchess had worn the diamond bracelet, as she also sported it at a State Dinner hosted by the President of Fiji at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva two nights earlier, on another leg of their long Tour.
Just after announcing her pregnancy to the world, the Duke and Duchess appeared in front of the media at Admiralty House, the Sydney residence of the Governor General of Australia, followed by a visit to the Taronga Zoo and a walkabout outside the Sydney Opera House. There, she wore the gold cuff bracelet with a sleek white dress.
The gold bracelet, featuring two cabochon stones, probably sapphires of onyx, was also identified as belonging to the late Princess.
Diana wore it quite often for daytime events and even some galas.
While the Duchess changed her dress for that evening’s reception at Admiralty House, the bracelet (and butterfly earrings) of her late mother-in-law remained, this time worn with a Brandon Maxwell dress.
The gold bracelet was worn again in January, at one of the first Royal Gala events of 2019, when the Duchess paired it with a gorgeous sequined Roland Mouret gown and Pippa Small Kyanite Stud Earrings.
Also while on her tour in Sydney, Meghan wore a pair of diamond butterfly earrings originally owned by her late mother-in-law.
The butterfly earrings were part of a suite rarely worn by the late Princess, though one notable occasion included a visit to the city of Prince George during a Tour of Canada.
