Tour a Modern Bohemian Family Room That's All Kinds of Cozy
Family rooms are fascinating creatures. They are the heart of the home after all and give you a hint of what the space and the family are all about. Lounging, reading, watching favorite movies, gathering... it all goes down in this very spot. For Stephanie of Olive and Tate, that meant crafting a room that feels cozy and welcoming while maintaining a beautiful aesthetic and one that can hold up to the rough and tumble nature of kids. Bright white with pops of coastal charm and a nod to boho are the result. Take the full tour captured by Courtney Malone right here!
Our family room has been a labor of love - after purchasing our home, we completed a major renovation project to open the family room to the kitchen. We love being able to see our babes, entertain and live in an open floor plan and we had a big job ahead of us to make the space our dream living room.
It is so important to us that our furniture and style matches our current stage of life, so we need a space that can handle rough and tumble, get together's with friends and serve as our hang out spot as a family. I set out to create a vibe that is clean, fresh, slightly coastal, a little boho and all kinds of comfortable.

Leathers, shades of navy and deep cherry wood tones bring a masculine element while the soft, velvet pillows and gold statement chandelier play up just a touch of glam. Our credenza is an IKEA Billy Bookcase hack with a custom, raw edge wood top and actual dock cleats for pulls.
All of the art on the walls has sentimental meaning - the gold framed large map is a nautical chart of the area that my Dad has fished my entire life (and a nod to my home state!), the coral pieces are DIY and I hand painted the art piece above the mantle, which is flanked by over sized family photos.
I love to mix metals so the silver candlesticks are a mix of my grandmother's heirlooms and newer pieces that were gifted to us for our wedding. Gold tones warm the space in small pops such as the cabinet pulls and photo frames. I painted the walls, trim and fireplace brick the same shade of white (Wedding Veil by Benjamin Moore) to accentuate the natural light and make the space feel as large as possible.
We are utilizing every nook and cranny for storage so baskets live under the console table, benches serve as a mud room and extra poufs and ottomans add additional seating. To keep things from looking too cluttered, we incorporated acrylic pieces where possible - two ghost chairs hold court with the drop-zone bench and our acrylic coffee table makes for a perfect slide for our resident preschooler. We love how the space turned out!
