Along with the star-studded lineup of nominees and presenters, the 2024 Grammys also featured many unbelievable performances, with singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman making a rare appearance on stage to perform her hit song "Fast Car," originally released in 1988, with Luke Combs, whose 2023 cover of the song became a top country track.
The two took the stage together in an amazing performance, with Chapman tugging on heartstrings as she gave the emotional performance over 30 years after her song's original release.

Fans were stunned by the surprising Grammy stage, with one emotional fan writing on X (formerly Twitter), "Not sure when I'll stop crying over Tracy Chapman singing Fast Car again, but won't [be] anytime soon."
"How beautiful was that? For millions of people, I bet watching Tracy Chapman perform once again was to unlock profoundly powerful memories, and be transported to some very raw places. Savor every second. Tracy is Eternal," another reacted.

Chapman originally won three Grammys in 1989 related to the song and her self-titled album, including Best New Artist, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In 2024, Combs is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for his "Fast Car" cover.
While Chapman has released seven other studio albums after Tracy Chapman, with the latest being Our Bright Future in 2008—even taking home another Grammy in 1997 for the song "Give Me One Reason"—since then, she has only performed a handful of times, leading a relatively private life.

When Combs' cover became a certified country hit, Chapman shared, "I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced 'Fast Car.'"
In 2023, Chapman became the first Black person to win the coveted Song of the Year CMA Award for "Fast Car," with the crowd giving her a standing ovation, although she was not in attendance at the event to accept the award.
Luckily for fans of the song, Chapman returned to the stage once again to celebrate the revival of "Fast Car" with a special Grammys performance.
