Trader Joe’s Shoppers Are Calling Its New Massive Holiday Treat ‘Diabolically Good’

What makes a holiday so special? Is it the festive decorations or the tantalizingly delicious food? Maybe it’s hearing your aunt’s rendition of "All I Want for Christmas is You" for the fifth time in a row. Whatever it is, the magic of the season is undeniable, and it’s even better when you share the holiday cheer with those you love.

Although each holiday is decidedly maximalist in its own right, Christmas takes things to an even grander scale. From presents to decor, everything is just a little more extravagant on Old Saint Nick’s favorite day. Sometimes, decking the halls requires more than a few sets of hands, and after a few hours of stringing lights and adorning the tree, a snack is definitely in order.

While there are quite a few seasonal choices for things to nibble on, Trader Joe’s always seems to have just the thing we didn’t know we needed. And its newest limited-time goodie is being called “diabolically good.” The treat in question? A massive shareable shortbread French butter cookie and you can bet that fans on the ever-reliable Trader Joe’s subreddit had more than a few words to say about the gargantuan dessert.

Perfectly in line with the season, the Hol Giant French Butter Cookie is a plate-sized cookie that serves as a nod to the French pastry broyé du Poitou, which was traditionally broken with a hammer and served during special events. Each monstrous cookie is made with concentrated butter, wheat flour, sea salt, sugar, egg and a smattering of sliced almonds as the final flourish on top.

One cookie is supposed to serve up to 12 people, but according to the comments on Reddit, you might want to grab two just in case. “That entire cookie is going into my mouth in less than twelve hours. I haven't felt this passionate about something in years,” said one enthusiastic user. Another agreed, “One serving size per hour - perfect for 12 hours!”

Though most users focused on the sheer size of the treat, a few weren’t sold on the price tag. “Overpriced at $8, I don't care how big it is. It's a butter cookie, an $8 butter cookie,” groaned an unimpressed Redditor. “It's the equivalent of a dozen cookies,” responded someone else. If you happen to be doing the math, each serving works out to about $.66 cents — which is a steal if you ask me!

Whether you serve this at your next holiday gathering, purchase it as a giant stocking stuffer or devour it yourself, you’ll want to hit TJ’s expeditiously to grab one (or two.) But if you’re worried about the price and would rather make your own cookies, this easy sugar cookie recipe is our go-to every year and you’ll have more than enough to share.
