The Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest will include a 5K run to benefit the American Cancer Society, live music, German food, beer, local vendors, competitions and more. Other activities include a stein-holding contest, a tapping of the keg, a dachshund race presented by the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter and a performance by German band Oompah-Calypse.
“Visit Tuscaloosa is excited to host Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz U.S. International and their 5K race,” said Kelsey Rush, Visit Tuscaloosa president and CEO, in a news release.
“We recognize the community's enthusiasm for more events, and with our deep ties to Mercedes and our Sister City in Schorndorf, Germany, we are proud to see this festival become a highly anticipated annual tradition,” Rush said.
The Mercedes manufacturing plant was founded in 1995 in Tuscaloosa County as the automaker's first production facility outside Germany. The plant has produced more than 4 million vehicles since the first one rolled off the assembly line 1997. Schorndorf, which is in the southwest part of Germany near Stuttgart, became Tuscaloosa's Sister City in 1996.
The 5K will be presented by Mercedes-Benz U.S. International and will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 in downtown Tuscaloosa.
The walk/run will begin at 402 23rd Ave. at Temerson Square then continue to Bryant-Denny Stadium (the Alabama football team has an open date that weekend) before returning to the start. Registration is available for $40 and includes race entry, T-shirt, a beer stein, admission to Oktoberfest and a free beer for runners 21 and older.
General admission tickets to Oktoberfest are $15 per person and children 12 and younger are admitted free. VIP tickets are also available for $75 per person.
