Universal Music Group and Music Health Alliance Launch Music Industry Mental Health Fund
Universal Music Group and non-profit Music Health Alliance are launching a new mental health initiative for the music industry, they announced Thursday.
The Music Industry Mental Health Fund will “provide comprehensive, high-quality outpatient mental health resources for music industry professionals nationwide,” according to a release. “We have been working on ways to establish a streamlined pathway for mental health access, funding and care planning,” UMG’s chief impact officer Susan Mazo said in a statement.

The fund will offer musicians access to personalized recommendations for mental health professionals, grants to help with care costs and funding resource recommendations, if needed, to continue care.
“Growing and continuing our partnership with Tatum [Hauck Allsep] and the Music Health Alliance was the most natural way to ensure continuous and effective mental health support for anyone working in our industry,” Mazo said in a statement.
“Music Health Alliance possesses the comprehensive resources necessary to address the full spectrum of mental health needs for music industry professionals. This includes financial assistance, a continuum of care for both mental and physical health, and wraparound services such as psychiatric support, facilitation of intensive outpatient and inpatient programs, and data collection,” Music Health Alliance Founder and CEO Tatum Hauck Allsep said in a statement. “MHA’s holistic approach ensures a long-term commitment to the health, well-being and sustainability of the music industry workforce.”
Artists signed to UMG will be able to use the program; however, the companies say the fund was established to “assist all members of the music industry.” Any current or former music industry professional will have access to services.
The Music Industry Mental Health Fund is an expansion of UMG’s four-year partnership with MHA. The initial healthcare partnership offers a “healthcare concierge to clients.” It has “already served nearly 1,000 clients and saved them more than $12.5 million in healthcare costs,” according to a release.
MHA offers a large slew of healthcare advocacy services including dental care resources, group health services, healthcare advocacy and confidential guidance, individual and family health insurance, mental health resources, senior care support and vision care resources.
Musicians’ access to healthcare has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks after Grammy-winning artist Chappell Roan used her best new artist acceptance speech advocate for healthcare and a living wage for developing artists.
Roan recently partnered with nonprofit backline, who similarly to MHA provides mental health and wellness resources to industry professional, to launch the campaign We Got You — a reference to Roan’s call out to labels. “We got you, but do you got us?” The campaign has already raised well over $200,000. Roan, Noah Kahan, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Lauv all donated $25,000 to the campaign, along with Live Nation, AGE Touring, the Wasserman Foundation, Hinterland Music Festival, talent manager Guy Oseary, Sumerian Records CEO Ash Avildsen.
