The uplifting way people from countries Trump mocked are responding to him
In response to President Trump‘s reportedly calling Haiti and regions in Africa “shithole countries,” U.S. immigrants are sharing their inspiring résumés on Twitter.
As first reported by the Washington Post, while discussing immigration in the Oval Office on Thursday, the president said, “Why do we want all these people from shithole countries coming here?” in reference to Africa and Haiti, then remarked that people from Norway would be preferable.
A source also told CNN that Trump said, “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”
On Friday, after the story went viral, the president tweeted the message below.
Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said “take them out.” Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!

However, lawmakers were “shocked,” a U.N. human rights representative called the remarks “shameful” and “racist,” and the Haitian ambassador to the U.S. said they were “regrettable.” But the most measured responses came from immigrants of so-called “shithole countries” with the hashtag “I’m from a shithole country.”

During a meeting last summer, according to a story published in December in the New York Times, Trump said that immigrants from Haiti “all have AIDS” and that if people from Nigeria came to the U.S., they would not “go back to their huts.” The White House denied the claims.
