I see millions of albums, huge houses, much prosperity—I'm going to be one of the richest motherf---ers in the world. I've always been highly favored."

How did Usher become famous?

Born Usher Raymond IV in Dallas on Oct. 14, 1978, Usher was raised by his mother in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He began singing in his local church choir when he was 9 years old, and eventually his grandmother discovered his talent, and the family moved to Atlanta to secure more professional opportunities for him.

When Usher was 13, met singer Bobby Brown's then-bodyguard A.J. Alexander at a local Atlanta talent show. Alexander took Usher under his wing and had him perform at local events and busk in parking lots.

The same year, Usher debuted on Star Search—which counts Destiny's Child (and obviously Beyoncé), Justin Timberlake, LeAnn Rimes, Tatyana AliChristina Aguilera and Britney Spears among its alumni, and Usher held the longest note in the show's entire history for a child. Plus, seriously, look at how cute he is!

Alexander brought then-LaFace Records A&R rep Bryant Reid to Usher's Star Search star turn, and Bryant then arranged for Usher to audition with his brother, famed producer L.A. Reid.

L.A. signed Usher on the spot, and his first track, "Call Me a Mack," was released later that year for the Poetic Justice soundtrack.

Usher ran into problems prepping for his first full-length album—puberty hit him hard, causing his voice to drop (and, temporarily, to get lost), and he struggled with acne, the treatment for which lightened his skin. All of those setbacks led L.A. Reid to doubt him.

"How can you embrace me and then all of a sudden you don't even want to return my phone calls?" Usher later recalled to Rolling Stone. He hit his limit one night, punching a wall in frustration. "The night I hit that wall was intense. I took off for thirty minutes, nonstop, five in the morning, running, running, running. Finally, all out of breath, I thought, 'You know what? I don't care what they think,'" he said. "'I'm going to win.'"

After that night, L.A. Reid sent Usher to New York to cultivate an image and sound with Sean "Diddy" Combs, which Usher later told Rolling Stone were the "hardest days" of his life.

The work paid off: Usher's self-titled debut album dropped in August 1994, selling more than 500,000 copies to date. That said, L.A. Reid thought it should have been bigger, leading Usher to work harder than ever. After graduating high school, he began working with producer Jermaine Dupri on his sophomore effort, My Way, which was released in May 1997. Buoyed by hits like "U Make Me Wanna," "Nice & Slow" and the title track, My Way sent Usher's star soaring, and the album has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.
