Uzo Aduba, the Emmy Award-winning actress, is now adding "author" to the lengthy list of her accomplishments: She has written a new memoir called The Road Is Good that pays tribute to her mother.
"I wanted to share more of my life with everybody," she says. "It felt really important to me to share the lessons and stories of my mother and I together growing up, and so much of her life is tied to my life because she poured so much into me." Her book no doubt will inspire many—so when she sat with Oprah Daily, we asked which books have inspired her the most.

The American-American Century, by Henry Louis Jr. Gates and Cornel West
"I got to read that book in my twenties. It was so rich, I remember, with so many different amazing figures who had just changed the shape in the most positive and affecting way of this country. People that I hadn't learned about in school, frankly sometimes. And I thought it was just so important and inspiring."
Macbeth, by William Shakespeare
"It's the first time I read a character, the woman Lady Macbeth, who was so strong and ambitious. To a fault. But she wasn't afraid of being in the lead, in the driver's seat and she had a cool head about her when it came to leading."
Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss
"Our teacher came in for snack time and we had green eggs and ham and nobody wanted to taste it. And finally, we tried it. We were the Sam and I remember saying it tastes like green eggs and ham. I said remember tasting it and saying it, [it] tastes like eggs and ham! And it stayed with me. The lesson from the book is that you should always try things."
